Weekend Wash Up - 23rd April 17

Well its been a while since my last weekend wash-up, with 9 months, 2 days and 14 hours to go to the big climb here's my wash up from the week:

Two rangers killed in the DRC

I was shocked and saddened to hear of the news of the death of two rangers in the Garamba National Park in the DRC.  African Parks released a statement confirming the death of these brave men who put their lives on the line to protect our wildlife from poachers.

Joel Meriko Ari was 27 and leaves behind his wife and two children.  Sergeant Gerome Bolimola Afokao was seconded to the Park by the Congolese Military, leaves behind his wife and nine children.

Nine elephant carcasses were also found.

This story reminds us that whilst we all may sit and talk about conservation, read about it, tweet about it and say all the right things, there are people out there DOING something about it and unfortunately this sometimes costs them their lives.  Rangers really are on the front line of wildlife protection and we shouldn't forget the sacrifices they make.

If you would like to show your appreciation for Rangers you can leave them a message of support on the United for Wildlife website by clicking the link below - spread some love and show them you care.

Thank a Ranger
